How to get a toddler to brush their teeth (without a battle)

If brushing your toddler's teeth feels like wrestling a small octopus, you're not alone. Resistance can be about wanting control, boredom, or a toothbrush that feels uncomfortable. A few small changes may help make the routine gentler.

1. Give them a job, not an order

Toddlers often enjoy being helpers. Try “Can you show me where your top teeth are?” rather than “Come and brush your teeth”. Let them hold the brush first, then you take a turn to help brush thoroughly.

2. Make the two minutes visible

Two minutes can feel endless to a three-year-old. A song or a timer they can see or hear gives brushing a clear ending. Work gently around all the teeth, with a grown-up doing or helping with the brushing. Ask your dentist about the right technique for your child.

3. Let them choose something

Small choices give a sense of control without changing the job: the blue or green toothbrush, the bathroom or kitchen sink, or which grown-up helps.

4. Keep it predictable

Try the same familiar order each evening: bath, pyjamas, teeth, story. Knowing what comes next may make transitions easier. Keep morning brushing part of the day too.

5. Celebrate finishing, not perfection

A high five, a sticker or a silly victory dance can celebrate the effort. Keep the grown-up's help calm and encouraging: praise doesn't replace thorough brushing.

6. Ask your dentist

If brushing is distressing, your child has sensory sensitivities, or you notice pain, ask your dentist or child health nurse for support. Your dentist can advise on a gentle approach, fluoride toothpaste and the right amount for your child's age.

These are general routine ideas, not dental advice. Follow your dental professional's guidance for your child.

A little help from an owl

We made Helper Hotline for everyday moments like these. You tap Start Call, your phone (pretend) rings, and Barnaby or Hazel the owl gives your little one their Sparkly Clean Teeth mission. A guided brushing timer takes them through top teeth, bottom teeth and tongue, with you alongside to help.

Splash Patrol (bath time) and Bedtime PJ's are free. Sparkly Clean Teeth and Bedtime Wind-Down are in Helper Hotline Club, which unlocks every mission.

The app has no ads, tracking or accounts. Missions work offline; subscription purchases and checks use an internet connection.
