LITTLE HELPER TIPS · AGES 2–5

A calm bath and bedtime routine for 2–5 year olds

Bedtime can feel easier when children know what comes next. A short, familiar routine may help your little helper wind down and give you fewer decisions to make at the end of a busy day. There's no perfect timetable: leave room for your child's pace.

A simple order that works for many families

  1. Bath or a warm wash. Keep it comfortable and unhurried. A grown-up checks the water temperature and stays within arm's reach throughout the bath. Never leave your child alone in the water or step away for the phone.
  2. Pyjamas. Lay them out first so there's no hunting. Offer a choice between two pairs if it helps.
  3. Teeth. Allow about two minutes for brushing, with a grown-up doing or helping with the brushing. Follow your dentist's advice on technique and toothpaste.
  4. Toilet and handwashing. If your child is toilet training, offer a relaxed chance to try, without pressure.
  5. One story and a cuddle. Lower the lights and choose a familiar favourite.
  6. Goodnight. Try the same few reassuring words each night.

Tips for winding down

  • Lower the lights as bedtime approaches, where practical.
  • Put screens aside before the routine and keep the focus on quiet time together. If using a mission, let the grown-up handle the phone and put it away afterwards.
  • Use “first, then” language: “First pyjamas, then story.”
  • Give a five-minute warning before bath time starts so the change isn't a surprise.
  • Keep a familiar order on weekends where you can, without worrying about an exact clock time.

When it goes wrong (it will!)

Some nights will be messy. That's normal. Pick the routine back up the next night, keep your voice calm, and celebrate the small wins. Adjust the order to suit your family rather than rushing to finish.

These are general routine ideas, not medical or sleep advice. If sleep difficulties persist or you're worried, speak with your child's health professional.

A little help from an owl

In Helper Hotline, a grown-up starts each playful pretend call from Barnaby or Hazel. Choose Splash Patrol for bath time, Sparkly Clean Teeth for guided brushing, Bedtime PJ's for getting cosy, or Bedtime Wind-Down for a soft lullaby and whispered goodnight. Set a daily bath-time reminder if it suits your family; a reminder never starts a mission by itself.

Splash Patrol (bath time) and Bedtime PJ's are free. Sparkly Clean Teeth and Bedtime Wind-Down are in Helper Hotline Club, which unlocks every mission.

The app has no ads, tracking or accounts. Missions work offline; subscription purchases and checks use an internet connection.
